Everyone knows that yoga is good for your health. From stress relief to weight loss to flexibility, the health benefits of yoga are extensive for the mind, body and soul. But, if you want to get started with yoga, how do you know which type to choose? Which is the best for you?
The type of yoga that’s best for each individual can vary, and it depends on the benefits you’re looking for. However, many people practice multiple types of yoga. There’s no need to choose just one!
As explained by Jessamyn Stanley in her new book, Every Body Yoga, “There’s value in incorporating a wide variety of asana styles into your practice.” Trying different types of yoga allows you to step out of your comfort zone and find the mix of styles that works best for you.
Bikram
This style of yoga is practiced in a heated room (about 105 degrees) and is made up of a series of specific choreographed movements. Its also known for the length of time spent holding poses. The heat may scare some off, but Stanley says it aids your flexibility.
Yin
Yin yoga classes are slow paced and, like Bikram, include long pose holds. It requires a mental workout, too: when holding hip opening poses for five minutes, for example, it can be difficult to stay in a meditative state. But don’t worry—this type of yoga is still good for everyone, because there are modifications for every move.
Vinyasa
Stanley calls this a dance-like type of yoga. Moves flow from one pose to the next with a focus on breathing. It can be a sweaty practice and popular among those who practice yoga in the U.S.
